WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Four days of faint barking finally led neighbors to a dog trapped in an unused cistern under a house in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Finally, on Monday, Matthew Burris tells the Observer-Reporter of Washington, Pa. (http://bit.ly/xDmT9Q ) that he located the source of the barking in his Waynesburg neighborhood and contacted the Greene County Humane Society.
Jane Gapen, the group's director, says the dog apparently pushed through the lattice under a porch and fell through some rotted boards into the cistern below. Police say the home's owner had lived there more than 20 years and didn't even know there was an unused cistern under his front porch.
Officials believe the beagle mix might have been chasing a squirrel or rabbit before falling 10 feet into stagnant water. They say the dog appeared unhurt.

Political campaigns can change every day. The Campaign Finance API now does a better job of keeping pace.
We worked with ProPublica, one of the heaviest users of the API, to make the API more real-time, and to surface more data, such as itemized contributions for every presidential candidate and ?super PAC?.
When the API was launched, most of the data it served up was updated every week or, in some cases, on a daily basis. But we work for news organizations, and what is news right now can be old news tomorrow. Committees that raise and spend money influencing federal elections are filing reports every day, not just on the day that reports are due.
The API now offers access to the details of filings within minutes after they are sent to the Federal Election Commission. We?ve also added some new responses and updated several others. But the biggest change is that users can get new information faster than ever before. Every 15 minutes, the API submits a form on the F.E.C. site listing today?s electronic filings. Previously, the fact that an electronic filing was made was the only real-time piece of information you could get. Now there?s a lot more.
Using our Fech gem, when a candidate or committee files a regular report detailing contributions and expenses, that committee?s summary information gets updated immediately in the API. When a new independent expenditure filing is sent to the F.E.C., the data from that report goes straight into the API, which means that we can update our election interactive within minutes. The API, and the latest changes to it, also help power ProPublica?s ?PAC Track? application that News Applications Developer Al Shaw developed. Al pushed some of the changes he needed to build PAC Track into the API and its Ruby wrapper, Campaign Cash ? like itemized contributions and electioneering communications.
Electioneering communications are broadcast political advertisements that identify a federal candidate and air within a certain time frame. Separate from independent expenditures, which specifically call for the election or defeat of a candidate, electioneering communications typically are the domain of non-profit organizations known as 501(c)(4)s, which do not have to reveal their donors. Three new electioneering communications responses allow users to retrieve the latest 20 communications, the latest 20 for a specific registered committee or for a specific date, much like the existing independent expenditure responses.
Both the electioneering communications and independent expenditure responses now have a ?unique_id? attribute, which is a SHA1 digest of the F.E.C.?s electronic filing number and the transaction identifier and can be used to keep duplicate records from your data. See the official documentation for more details on how unique_id works. We?ve also added ?amended_from? attributes to help you find the original filings of amended transactions. Like independent expenditures, electioneering reports are supposed to be filed electronically, not on paper, and most are. But there are some only on paper, and we?re working on ways to make sure that that information gets into the API, too.
Another new response provides summary information for individual presidential candidate filings (as opposed to overall summary information compiled from multiple filings). So if you wanted to compare a presidential candidate?s changes in money raised or spent from one report to the next, that?s now possible. Thanks to ProPublica, we?ve also added the ability to retrieve itemized contribution data for presidential candidates and Super PACs (including those active in congressional races). Check out the documentation for examples of these new responses.
In improving the API, we?ve also added to the Fech and Campaign Cash gems, and have released new versions of both on Github. We welcome contributors to those projects and your suggestions in our developers? forum.

However, we need to look before we leap. ?Details of the changes in the FSA comes after Sants reveals a new approach to consumer protection, said last week that he would test the financial products to support, for example, mortgage or debt before they launched the company, rather than trying to pick up the pieces after a fall.On Friday night in a speech at the Said Business School at Oxford University, Sants says the FSA will follow an approach ?based on the results of financial services regulation to? to replace the regime in many different ways, called the ?light touch? regulation ?or? principle-based.Compensation efforts, which is currently focusing on insurance, payment protection will continue, but the Sants also promises ?intensive surveillance?, with the goal to stop potential problems before they get out of control, through the involvement of staff of FSA plan new products and strategies.?People tend to say the FSA make mistakes,? he said. ?But in fact the FSA simply does not do certain things. This does not mean that we are trying to make judgments about the future and that their judgment was proven wrong; This is indeed a bit that we do not make any judgment at all.?We responded to the facts in the field, to observe the events. We do not make judgments about the future. ??What we did in the past is totally different than what we do now.?Ten years ago, the FSA only has a 2,030 staff and a budget of ? 196m but the latest expansion will increase the number of employees from 3.240 to 3,700, Sants said a new approach with different needs the skills and expertise on what yangbiasanya found in the labor force.About 100 new members would be required to assess the implications of the United Kingdom will Solvency II insurance project of the European Union, which will be the largest project the FSA has done, at a cost of ? 100 million internal regulator-150 million over five years. These costs will be borne directly by the insurance company United Kingdom. The FSA has been attacked for failing to predict the biggest financial crisis since the 1930s, with the Treasury Committee Chairman John McFall, Selected, commented in relation to Northern Rock that ?apparently the FSA systematically have failed in their duties?.However, in the event the Oxford Word Sants was that the Committee, like society in General, seems to have a different concept of what the FSA had intended to do.?Committee of the Ministry of finance Was thought we do this and the men and women on the street we also think that like that,? he said about the demand for a more interventionist approach.?So I said to my staff: If this is what they think we did, that?s what we will do. Then we cannot be criticised for not doing it. ?

It's like a cosmic version of Russian nesting dolls. Tiny dust grains collected from the surface of the asteroid Itokawa harbour even smaller particles and craters of their own - the scars of high-speed collisions with nanometre-sized impactors.
In 2010, Japan's Hayabusa probe delivered more than 1500 rocky particles from Itokawa to Earth. Studies of some of the grains last year suggested that the 500-metre-long asteroid probably began its life as a much larger rock, measuring at least 20 kilometres across. Indeed, Itokawa has a very low density, suggesting it is a rocky rubble pile that probably coalesced after its parent body was smashed in an impact.
Now researchers led by Eizo Nakamura of Okayama University in Misasa, Japan, have revealed violence on an even smaller scale. Scanning electron microscope images of five dust grains, ranging from 0.04 to 0.11 millimetres wide, show even smaller particles stuck to the grains.
These are thought to be mostly shrapnel from neighbouring grains that were struck by high-speed space dust, and occasionally bits of the extra-asteroidal impactors themselves. Some grains also show miniature craters, where nanometre-sized impactors lodged into the grains, sometimes melting their immediate surroundings.
Understanding these processes sheds light on how the space environment "weathers" asteroids' surfaces, which in turn may help researchers better estimate asteroids' ages.

For whatever reason, researchers have long been stuck on the idea of harnessing the wasted energy potential of the human body. We've seen our nation's brightest try to siphon power off of our spare body heat, our breath and even our blood -- we haven't been able to cast off our wall chargers just yet, but progress is being made. Today's no-socket wonder comes from Wake Forest University's Center of Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials, and it falls into the body-heat category. Power Felt, a new fabric-like thermoelectric device comprised of layers of carbon nanotubes and flexible plastic fibers, can create an electrical charge from temperature differences.
The Power Felt's layered nanotubes allow it to generate more electricity than standalone carbon nanotube / polymer composite films and, according to researchers, could add only $1 to the cost of a charging cell phone cover. "Imagine it in an emergency kit, wrapped around a flashlight, powering a weather radio, charging a prepaid cell phone," said project head David Carroll, "Literally, just by sitting on your phone, Power Felt could provide relief during power outages or accidents." The thermoelectric technology still has a long way to go before it's ready for the market, however, leaving the US military's technology savvy tailors hanging off the edge of their seats.

The Leaving Cert is the last exam given in the Irish school system for secondary pupils. These are the final exams given before college and is considered very difficult by nature. Most students get years of preparation for this examination, and this is normally known as the ?senior cycle?. The standard age of exam takers is between 17-19 years old.
The most common programme is the Established Leaving Cert, that is a 2-year programme that covers several subjects. Subjects tend to be studied at Higher or Ordinary level, which is equal to Honours or Pass levels. Some subjects, including Maths and Irish could be studied at Foundation level. Throughout the senior cycle, students usually study between 6 to seven subjects, Established Leaving Certificate students typically take a minimum of 5. Students should choose courses in respect to the lowest entry requirements of their desired colleges.
Some Colleges require six subjects, which includes English, Irish and a final third language. Within these Programme?s the maths leaving cert is recognized as among the most difficult, and is widely the most dreaded. To ensure that students to do well, they will need to study within the subjects provided for the examination in their level.
The higher level maths leaving certificate exam includes a pair of two hour and 30 minute (150 minute) written papers There is also a maximum of 100 points for higher level, 60 for ordinary level and no points for foundation level students.
Content: The type of content within the Maths exam differs depending on the student?s level. Higher-level students and ordinary level students will each have to study differently in order to be properly prepared for the exam. But the material may be listed under similar, larger subject headings, these heading are:
* Arithmetic (ordinary levels only) * Algebra * Geometry * Trigonometry * Sequences and Series * Functions and also Calculus * Discrete Mathematics and Statistics
Higher Level Subjects * Further Calculus and Series * Further Probability and Statistics * Groups * Further Geometry
Ordinary Level Subjects * Further Geometry * Plane Vectors * Further Sequences as well as Series * Linear Programming
Foundation Level Subjects * Number Systems * Arithmetic * Areas and Volumes * Algebra * Statistics and Probability * Trigonometry * Functions and Graphs * Geometry
The papers and grading schemes (higher level): Paper 1 consists of 8 questions, 6 of the best questions are marked. All questions could be answered, but the best 6 questions are only marked.
Paper 2 offers 7 questions and the best 5 are marked. Within the 2nd section (section B) you can find four questions, of which one has to be answered. Each question is work fifty marks evenly.
Right answers are given total marks, incorrect answers are divided into 2 groups ?slips? and ?blunders?. Small mathematical mistakes are ?slips? and that only drops a single mark, it is possible to get 9 out of 10 marks on a wrong answer this way. Blunders, nevertheless, are mathematic mistakes and lose 3 marks.
For a Leaving Cert student, a lot of effort goes into studying for theLeaving Cert Maths exam. It is a comprehensive test of your ability, which proves to be challenging for most students. Mocks.ie offers students several services to aid their exam preparation such as past papers, exam breakdown and more.
A new treatment for advanced skin cancer almost doubles survival times, according to an international study.
Doctors say 132 patients in the US and Australia who were given the drug vemurafenib gained several extra months of life.
Research in the New England Journal of Medicine found those in the study lived an average of 16 months, compared with nine months on conventional treatment.
Vemurafenib (Zelboraf) has been approved for use in Europe.
The treatment is one of two drugs for late-stage melanoma, approved on fast-track in the US last year, which offer hope for patients with advanced melanoma.
Before that, there had been no new drugs for the cancer for more than a decade.
Vemurafenib is suitable for about half of patients with advanced melanoma as it targets tumours that express a certain gene mutation.
Dr Antoni Ribas, a professor of haematology/oncology and a researcher at the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California-Los Angeles, said: ?This study shows that Zelboraf changes the natural history of this disease. This data is beyond what I would have expected.
?We?re seeing a significant number of patients with durable responses to the drug, and that the whole group of treated patients is living longer.
?These results tell us that this drug is having a very big impact, and this changes the way we treat metastatic melanoma.?
According to the European Medicines Agency, the drug has been recommended for approval in Europe, pending final authorisation by the European Commission.
Elizabeth Woolf, head of Cancer Research UK?s information website Cancer Help UK, said: ?This is an interesting, impressive but relatively small trial of a promising new-generation melanoma drug, which Cancer Research UK is proud to have played a role in developing.?
But she said there were still questions that remain unanswered, not least the cost.
We?re getting somewhere with these targeted drugs but we have a whole raft of research still to do address the issue of resistance?
End Quote Kate Law Cancer Research UK
?Everyone on the trial had the drug, so we cannot tell how large the benefits are, compared to people who didn?t have it, or had another treatment. And because the drug targets a particular gene fault, only half of all melanoma patients are eligible.
?About half of those treated seem to benefit, so it could potentially help roughly a quarter of patients with advanced melanoma overall.
?Looking at these uncertainties, and now that the drug is available to UK cancer patients, it will be interesting to see what price the manufacturer charges so as not to place too great a strain on already scarce NHS resources.?
Drug resistance
Cancer Research UK said once the drug was licensed in Europe, patients would be able to discuss treatment options with their doctor.
In England, patients will have to apply to the Cancer Drugs Fund, the charity said.
Kate Law, director of clinical and population research at Cancer Research UK, said the treatment was one of a new generation of cancer drugs targeted at patients with a specific genetic make-up.
While it offered hope, she said, it was not a cure as the cancer eventually became resistant to the drug.
She told the BBC: ?This is not a cure ? you?re talking an extra six months of life.
?We?re getting somewhere with these targeted drugs but we have a whole raft of research still to do to address the issue of resistance.?

Essentially a plug-in for the Finder in Mac OS, TotalFinder ($18), compatible with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10.7 Lion, adds new ways to see information in the Finder space of your Apple computer. The most visible feature, tabs, adds greater usability and visibility to Finder. Rather than have multiple Finder windows open, you can easily work from one. The application introduces a few other features to enhance the Finder, some very visible and some less so. At $18, TotalFinder seems a bit pricey for a fairly niche plug-in, and the value you can get out of it largely depends on whether you?re a command-line user who will tap into its advanced features.
Basic Features TotalFinder has four basic features: tabs, dual mode, folders on top, and show system files.
My favorite of the basic features, tabs, is so ridiculously simple I can't believe it isn't already a feature in Apple OS X (and I wonder if it's something we might see as a late addition to Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion). As you'd imagine from the name, the tab feature lets you add tabs to one Finder window rather than opening new ones. TotalFinder enables one window, but multiple spaces for things like the Applications list, Documents, Pictures, Downloads, your Mac home space, or any other directory that you typically want open. Having tabs rather than separate windows makes them all easier to see.
TotalFinder's dual mode takes the tab concept a little further, giving you side-by-side views of two spaces simultaneously. It's like having two tabs open in one space. Dual mode's biggest asset is it enables easier dragging and dropping of files and folders. It's also useful if you typically have more than one Finder window open at once, like if you typically have open one local folder and a second shared folder on a server.
Another basic feature, called "Folders on top," very nearly duplicates the Finder's existing ability to sort by kind. If you sort by kind in Finder, all the folders that are in view will be grouped together, although they won't necessarily appear at the top of the screen. TotalFinder puts them there. The idea is some users want their folders to be foremost visible, while files should fall below. If you like having folders on top, you'll certainly like that TotalFinder still lets you use the "sort by" feature built into Finder and Apple OS X, but keeps folders on top after the sort is complete. In other words, you can sort by file size, and the folders will still take the top slots regardless of their size.
The last of the basic features, show system files, may be more for advanced users than average consumers. Apple OS X hides system files from the end user. Many people don't need or want to know that these files even exist. Those who do know about them and want to get at them can use TotalFinder to toggle to display them without having to restart Finder. If you panic at the thought of accidentally deleting some necessary program file, this is not a feature for you.
Advanced Features TotalFinder has three additional advanced features: visor, asepsis, and tweaks. If you stopped paying attention to this article halfway through the previous paragraph, I can assure you that these three features will be of little interest. You can skip to the end of the review and decide whether the first three basic features that redesign the Finder display are worth $18.
Visor isn't a really a highly advanced feature, but only advanced users will find the utility in it. TotalFinder's visor makes a Finder space pop up quickly and take up about half the screen when you press a hotkey. It works system wide, and it looks best when you hide Mac's dock (or move it to the side or top instead of the bottom of the screen). The point of visor is to change your workflow, which is why only so-called advanced users will care much about it. Most people know how they work, and it doesn't take much to click on the desktop and press cmd+N to pop open a new Finder window.
Unlike visor, asepsis really is more advanced. It redirects the creation of .DS_Store files, which are tiny files that are created every time you view a folder for which you've changed some of the display options. Most users don't worry about these files. But command-line users can see them and the files can get in the way. So asepsis just throws those files into another location and isolates them from view.
Tweaks, while billed as a feature, doesn't do anything in itself but rather is the section name where you can adjust other TotalFinder settings, such as keyboard shortcuts for TotalFinder and other options.
Value TotalFinder redisplays the Finder space in Mac in highly useful, albeit fairly minor, ways. Tabs and dual mode make the Finder a neater and tighter space in which to work. The additional features offered in the plug-in likely won't entice average users to pay for it, but more advanced Mac geeks who care about hidden files and where their .DS_Store files are kept may find those features increase TotalFinder's value enough to warrant the $18 price.

For disaster debris arriving from Japan, radiation least of the concernsPublic release date: 22-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

CORVALLIS, Ore. The first anniversary is approaching of the March, 2011, earthquake and tsunami that devastated Fukushima, Japan, and later this year debris from that event should begin to wash up on U.S. shores and one question many have asked is whether that will pose a radiation risk.
The simple answer is, no.
Nuclear radiation health experts from Oregon State University who have researched this issue following the meltdown of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant say the minor amounts of deposition on the debris field scattered in the ocean will have long since dissipated, decayed or been washed away by months of pounding in ocean waves.
However, that's not to say that all of the debris that reaches Pacific Coast shores in the United States and Canada will be harmless.
"The tsunami impacted several industrial areas and no doubt swept out to sea many things like bottled chemicals or other compounds that could be toxic," said Kathryn Higley, professor and head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at OSU.
"If you see something on the beach that looks like it may have come from this accident, you shouldn't assume that it's safe," Higley said. "People should treat these debris with common sense; there could be some things mixed in there that are dangerous. But it will have nothing to do with radioactive contamination."
Higley and other OSU experts have been active in studying the Fukushima accident since it occurred, and are now doing research to help scientists in Japan better understand such issues as uptake of radioactive contamination by plants growing near the site of the accident. They also studied marine and fishery impacts near Japan soon after the incident.
"In the city and fields near Fukushima, there are still areas with substantial contamination, and it may be a few years before all of this is dealt with," Higley said. "But researchers from all over the world are contributing information on innovative ways to help this area recover, including some lessons learned from the much more serious Chernobyl accident in 1986 in the Ukraine."
Some of the technology to deal with this is complex. Other approaches, she said, can be fairly low-tech removal of leaf litter, washing, plowing the ground, collecting and concentrating water runoff.
The repercussions of the event in the ocean, however, and implications for distant shores are much more subdued. Most of the discharge that was of concern was radionuclides of iodine and cesium, which were deposited on widely dispersed, floating marine debris days after the tsunami. Most of the iodine by now will have disappeared due to radioactive decay, and the cesium washed off and diluted in the ocean.
"There are a lot of misconceptions about radioactivity," Higley said. "Many people believe that if it can be measured, it's harmful. But we live in a world of radiation coming to us from the sun, or naturally present in the earth, or even from our own bodies.
"There are higher natural levels of radiation found all around the Rocky Mountains, for instance," she said. "And we can still measure radioactive contaminants in nature from old atmospheric nuclear weapons tests more than 50 years ago."
Like most of those other forms of radiation, Higley said, any measurable radioactivity found on debris from Fukushima should be at very low levels and of no health concern much less, for instance, than a person might receive in a single X-ray.
Debris from Japan should start to arrive in the U.S. and Canada late this year or in 2013 following normal ocean currents, say other OSU experts who are studying this issue. When they do, some aspects of them might be dangerous a half-filled, floating, sealed bottle of a toxic chemical, for instance. So people should exercise caution.
But they don't need to worry about radiation.

Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch said Wednesday that he doesn?t feel undertaxed.
?I pay over 30 percent every year,? said Welch on CBS?s ?This Morning.? ?I don?t feel undertaxed in any way at all.?
It was clear that Welch would not be following the model of billionaire Warren Buffett?s friendly relations with the president.
Buffett became the inspiration behind the ?Buffett rule,? which suggests that millionaires and billionaires should pay at least the same rate as middle-class wage earners, after he pointed out his secretary paid a higher effective tax rate than he did.
Although his self-reported tax rate of over 30 percent indicates that Welch might be close to adhering to the rule ? the highest tax bracket is 35 percent ? the businessman offered no Buffett-esque support for the president.
?I will support any Republican nominee against the current incumbent,? he said, when asked if he could support Santorum if the former Pennsylvania won Michigan and the nomination.
Pushed by host Charlie Rose to say whether he?d be prepared to pay more taxes if they could be sure where the money was going, Welch was dismissive.
?If we thought it would go to deficit reduction and not more silly programs, maybe that would be a good argument,? said the wealthy businessman.
But with that said, Welch wasn?t completely critical of President Barack Obama, saying the president?s plan to reduce the corporate tax rate was a step in the right direction.
?We?re going to have dueling tax proposals. As long as they go in this direction, it?s all good. But there won?t be anything done this year,? said Welch.
And Welch also had good things to say about the president?s foreign policy. ?I think the president has done a reasonable job in foreign policy. In my opinion, it?s been one of his strongest areas,? he said.
Migraine headaches are a real pain, literally. This painful condition is most often experienced as a strong, throbbing pain on one side of the head which is often accompanied by intolerance to sound and light, and nausea. While medications are usually prescribed, chiropractic therapy provides a natural alternative that is effective. If they make an appointment with a chiropractor Athens GA migraine sufferers can learn more about this kind of care.
Chiropractic medicine focuses on finding the underlying cause of an illness and healing it. The practitioner will examine the patient?s spine and neck at the first appointment as well as ask them a series of questions to get a more clear picture of the patient?s background and lifestyle. Such things as family medical history, recent traumas or injuries, allergies, and diet will be discussed.
Many chiropractic doctors are of the belief that migraines originate from a misalignment or subluxation in the spinal vertebrae. When a vertebra is dislocated, it exerts pressure on nearby nerves that transcend to the head and can lead to a migraine. Another speculation is that this pressure may create an imbalance of chemicals in the brain which can cause these headaches to develop.
A chiropractic adjustment is the technique most often used by a chiropractor to heal a misalignment in the back or neck. This method uses a quick and forceful thrust which is applied to the affected vertebra to help it return to its proper placement and relieving pressure from nerves in the area. Receiving this therapy has been shown to lower the occurrence of migraines in patients.
Since a chiropractor is a holistic healer, they strive to gain a complete picture of every aspect of a patient?s life. By identifying possible triggers of the condition, they can help counsel the patient and make recommendations for lifestyle changes to avoid these issues. Patient and practitioner can work together to come up with a healthy plan to bring the body better into balance.
Seeking the knowledge and skilled services of a chiropractor Athens GA can find help from, is the best thing a migraine sufferer can do towards their healing. If the cause of the problem can be found, it can be corrected so the pain is put to an end. Chiropractic therapy encourages the body to naturally heal on its own.
Migraine headache sufferers can get fast and natural pain relief through chiropractic care. You will find more information about the best chiropractor Athens GA at http://www.ChiropractorAthens.com right now.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2012) ? Deployed in 2010 and 2011, the gliders have also profiled a 200-metre tall wall of water at the core of long-lived ocean eddies formed from the East Australian Current. The study, by University of Technology Sydney and CSIRO oceanographers, revealed the value of new sensors being deployed by Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System.
"We're getting a terrific amount of data that is opening up a very big window on Australia's oceans," UTS scientist Dr Mark Baird said.
Dr Baird was the lead author of a paper published this week in Geophysical Research Letters. Dr Baird is a Research Fellow with UTS Plant Functional Biology and Climate Change Cluster.
"In this case, we have seen for the first time a 200-metre tall, 40 kilometre wide disc formed from water that originated in Bass Strait that amazingly remains undiluted as it travels hundreds of kilometres," he said.
"This new discovery is a clear example of the benefits arising from a significantly enhanced technical ability to explore our oceans and identify features relevant to marine ecosystems and climate."

Scientists have known that salty Bass Strait water, with its unique chemical signature, flows into the Tasman Sea north-east of Flinders Island, sinking to a depth of 400-800 metres in a feature referred to as the Bass Strait Cascade.
However, the porpoising action of the $200,000 pre-programmed ocean gliders has given scientists data to a depth of 1000 metres and a detailed insight into anti-clockwise rotating warm-core eddies that regulate ocean conditions and influence the ocean food chain.
Co-author and leader of these Integrated Marine Observing System deployments, CSIRO Wealth from Oceans scientist Ken Ridgway, said the gliders were programmed to sample across the East Australian Current and through long-lived ocean eddies up to 200 kilometres across that form off New South Wales.
"East of Tasmania, we found bodies of water entrained in the ocean eddies that were originally formed six months previously in Bass Strait and that were up to 40 kilometres wide and 200-300 metres in height," Mr Ridgway said.
"Further measurements show that at least some of this Bass Strait water makes the journey past southern Tasmania and possibly thousands of kilometres into the Indian Ocean."
The $230M Integrated Marine Observing System has successfully deployed a range of observing equipment in the oceans around Australia, and is making all of the data freely and openly available through the IMOS Ocean Portal [external link] for the benefit of Australian marine and climate science as a whole.
The Bass Strait study was part-funded through the Australian Climate Change Science Program, a joint initiative of CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency with further support from the Australian Research Council and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.
IMOS is supported by the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy and the Super Science Initiative.

"The Real Housewives of New York" finished taping two weeks ago with its new cast, and producers are already saying this is the best season yet -- the ladies travel the globe and even go skinny dipping.
"Sonja [Morgan] and Ramona [Singer] have totally bonded and formed a great alliance against the new ladies," a show insider tells me. "They are so inseparable this season that they shared a bed together in St. Barts and even went skinny dipping late one night after enjoying a few glasses of Ramona's wine."
This will be the first season of the hit show since original cast members Jill Zarin and Alex McCord were fired and replaced with Carole Radziwill, a distant relative of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, fashion designer Heather Thomson, and Wall Street wife Aviva Drescher, who is related to actress Fran Drescher.
"This season you will see the ladies travel to London, where Carole thinks it's so funny that LuAnn [de Lesseps] insists that everyone call her 'The Countess,' that she makes all the ladies refer to her as 'The Princess' to mock her," one of the ladies tells me. Carole is the widow of Prince Anthony Radziwill, who died August 10, 1999, at age 40 after a five-year battle with cancer.
But when the ladies travel to Miami and St. Barts, that's where the real trouble begins.
"Things between Ramona and the new ones get so bad at one point they even discussed recreating the bathroom scene from the film 'Bridesmaids' after Ramona gives them her new red wine to taste," an insider tells me. "Ramona now thinks it's her show for sure."
Get a glass of wine in these women and there's no telling what they'll do.
"You know me, I always skinny dip," Sonja tells me. "Why else would you rent a house? I can't tell you if I did it on film or if I did it with Ramona because that would be a storyline and I can get in trouble for that according to my contract."
