Team Work pays off for Team Pheonix in the first Apprentice Show ...

team building The Apprentice

We?re big fans of The Apprentice ? especially since our own company features a team building event styled after the popular television show, called ?Team Apprentice.? Read about our thoughts on the first week ? and how much can be gained from using Apprentice-inspired events to improve productivity and quality at the corporate level.

The nation sat glued to their televisions last night as the new contestants were introduced for this series of The Apprentice.?? Lord Alan wasted no time in telling the entrepreneurs that he wouldn?t take kindly to them hiding in the shadows and they should all step up and make themselves heard.

Oddly enough, the exact opposite happened when it came to choosing the first project manager for the boys? team?Pheonix and the girls? team?Sterling, as everyone sat around quietly waiting for someone else to put themselves in the firing line.

Eventually Technology Entrepreneur, Nick Holzherr, 25, put himself forward for Team Phoenix and the collective sigh of relief was clearly audible.?? Over at Team Sterling, Architect, Gabrielle Omar, 29, volunteered her services declaring that the task to design and merchandise goods was something she had expertise in and the team were quick to back her.

The teams were then split into two groups, with one dispatched to a large warehouse to find blank products and the other remaining behind to come up with some designs.? Team Sterling decided to corner the baby market and have bibs, t-shirts and jigsaws with a cute animal design, quickly sketched by 29 year old, Business Development Manager, Jade Nash. ??Team Phoenix, looking to cash in on the tourist trade, plumped for some rather unimaginative designs of a London bus and a Union Jack.

Despite clearly having the best merchandise, the girls? team?s lack of communication quickly morphed into sheer panic, with lots of feisty young woman trying to shout talk over one another.?? Basic business decisions such as margin and sales strategy had been ignored in the bid to create a slick product, with half the team spending a good chunk of their selling time stuck in traffic.? When they did eventually reach their intended destination ? London Zoo, they took on a peculiar sales technique of taking it in turns to approach potential customers instead of separating to maximise their sales chances.? They then decided to corner a bewildered and rather scared looking shop keeper in a bid to get her to buy the remainder of the stock, causing Nick Hewer to call them a ?pack of baying hyenas?, unsurprisingly they didn?t bag the sale.

In contrast the boys appeared to have a better all-round strategy and managed (after reducing their prices to a more reasonable rate) to shift their badly made teddies and tote bags in decent numbers.? ?Although they did have to refund a shop keeper after she discovered just how badly made the tote bags were.

The boardroom showdown declared the boys the winners with a profit of ?616, compared to a paltry ?214 profit for the girls.

Project Manager Gabrielle decided to bring in Katie Wright?guilty of doing, or saying little all task, and Bilyana Apostalova for losing valuable time at London Zoo.

With most people thinking that quiet Katie would go, Lord Alan started the series off with a twist and after being given a ?rags to riches? story and a geography lesson on his home town he decided that Bulgarian Bilyana had talked herself into getting the immortal finger point.? She was still pleading with him as he uttered the words ?You?re Fired!?

Do you think your teams could have performed better at a similar task?? Our Team Apprentice team building event encourages team work and communication skills in a fun and dynamic way.
