Chewbacchus science fiction Carnival parade plans move to ...

The Chewbacchus science fiction-inspired Carnival parade will move from Central City to Marigny in 2013, according to co-founder Ryan S. Ballard. The new route still requires New Orleans Police Department approval, Ballard said, but he?s ?ninety percent sure? the three year old krewe will get the go-ahead.

For the past two Carnivals, the do-it-yourself mini parade has begun on Clio Street near St. Charles and circled through the adjoining neighborhood on a unique route. Ballard said that in the future, the krewe plans to begin and end the parade near its Marigny den, thereby avoiding the logistical headaches of transporting the small floats and props uptown and back. The tentative new Marigny route, Ballard said, will begin on Port Street at Royal Street, follow N. Peter to Frenchmen St., and follow St. Claude Ave. to Franklin Ave. The date of the parade is Jan. 26.

As in past years, Ballard hopes that actor Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars movie series will ride as grand marshal. A golf cart-powered Millennium Falcon float is being planned to accommodate the star. Mayhew has not yet been confirmed.
