Olympics 2012: Colombia's Lady Andrade no lady
Abby Wambach shiner posted on Twitter

In the Olympics one expects the athletes from around the globe to treat each other with respect.

But a women's soccer player from Colombia, Lady Andrade, didn't act like a lady when she sucker punched U.S. team player Abby Wambach.

Andrade wasn't penalized during the game. But afterwards she was given a two-game penalty by FIFA. She won't be allowed to play against France or in the quarterfinals if her team advances.

Wambach Tweeted the shiner and you can see her dramatic fall in the 39th minute of the game.

Still, the women's team won 3 to 0 over Colombia in Saturday's match.

Andrade is a loser in the Olympics 2012 for not demonstrating good sportsmanship.

McCartney paid 1 pound ($1.57) for Olympics gig

LONDON (AP) ? Don't spend it all in one place, Paul.

London Olympic organizers say former Beatle Paul McCartney and other star performers who took part in Friday's opening ceremony essentially donated their time ? receiving a mere pound ($1.57) ? for their performances.

The nominal fee was offered to make the Olympics contracts binding ? but pales in comparison to the millions big names like McCartney can command for a stadium gig.

Other performers such as Mike Oldfield, Dizzee Rascal and Emeli Sande are also thought to have received the nominal fee.

Director Danny Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" extravaganza featured British music that spanned generations, right up to live performances from two of the hottest homegrown acts of the moment: grime star Rascal and the band Arctic Monkeys.

Use Of Telephone Systems for Communication | ArticleWebby.com

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012. Author : hostarticles. 9 views.

There are many reasons why used phone systems can prove to be quite handy when it comes to business communication or even personal communication. With increasing inflation, most companies are looking for cost cutting and if making good use of used telephone systems can save a lot of money, there is not any reason why it should not be adopted as a practice. It is important to rely though, on companies that offer expertise with used telecom equipment and provide a guarantee on the quality and performance of the equipment.

You can pick used telecom equipment at great rates from companies that not only test the equipment but also guarantee their performance. This provides multiple benefits. On one side you do not have to shell money on brand new equipment and on the other hand, you do not have to worry about defective equipment. Besides, with used equipment dealers, repair or replacement of the product is quite quick helping you get on with your business. Apart from saving on costs, making use of second hand telecom equipment could also be a great way of recycling products. Reuse is a far better option and can be a strategic decision taken by companies that support eco-friendly measures.

It is not a bad idea to deal with companies that offer refurbished equipment especially when you get repair and service facilities for the spare equipment. Another important advantage offered by such companies is that older equipment that is not manufactured anymore can still be put to good use. The best used equipment dealers not only refurbish but also clean the equipment before shipping it. There are good chances that the equipment is delivered in fine shape. It is even possible that you get equipment that is not more than a few months old thus giving you great returns.

Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen expresses "surprise" at Steve Wisniewski's resignation

NAPA -- Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he expected assistant line coach Steve Wisniewski to be part of the staff and that his resignation came too late to bring in a replacement.

Wisniewski resigned for ``personal reasons'' -- a decision that tackle Khalif Barnes said he learned of through text message two weeks earlier. Allen didn't say when he was informed, but said the late notice led to making Frank Pollack the lone offensive line coach.

"It was a little bit of a surprise,'' Allen told reporters Sunday. ``Obviously he has his personal reasons as to why he made that decision. I will say this, it was totally his decision. It was nobody else's decision.''

Pollack, who was the assistant line coach in Houston last season where Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp was quarterbacks coach, will be primarily responsible for returning the club to the zone blocking system it used exclusively under Tom Cable from 2007 through 2009.

When Hue Jackson arrived as offensive coordinator, replacing Knapp, in 2010, Oakland integrated zone blocking with gap and power blocking.

``We thought about whether to bring in somebody or not and we just felt like at this point, the right thing to do was stick with the coaches we had and go forward,'' Allen said. ``I've got every confidence in the world in Frank Pollack as an offensive line coach.''

Mother - Justin Bieber - EzineMark

18-year-old superstar Justin Bieber covered the UK?s Summer 2012 issue of Rollacoaster magazine just over a month after the release of his third studio album ?Believe?. The Canadian pop sensation posed in a series of black and white pictures, looking hip in jeans and sports tracksuits. Some close-up shots showed the cute teen wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the word ?Mother? on the front of it when he smouldered for the photographer. Justin Bieber wore amped up, stylish leisurewear throughout the spread.

In his cover feature, he shared: ??Each time I break a record I?m always happy. With my YouTube stuff, Baby has more views than any video ? ever. So my next goal is to reach one billion views on a video.? The teen idol also spoke to the magazine about his new album ?Believe? which is the proof of his evolved sound that steps away from teeny-bopper cuteness and into a more developed coolness. The ?As Long as You Love Me? singer looked grown up while covering Rollacoaster magazine.

Enjoy some pictures of Justin Bieber on the summer 2012 cover of Rollacoaster magazine.

The superstar tells Rolla Coaster: ?I am growing up, I am now 18 and my fans are growing up with me. I?m getting older and I want that to reflect in my album ? it is just more mature and reflecting the age that I am.?

The teen star definitely brings some of his grown and sexy to the spread, but it doesn?t mean that he has an adult?s common sense. Justin Bieber was reportedly using a number of profanities during a 12-hour flight to the U.S. from Australia where he has been on a promotional tour. The singer and his companions were blurting out increasingly more offensive words, getting louder and louder. One female passenger, a mother of two had become so fed up with it that she supposedly approached him and delivered a stern lecture concerning what words are and are not appropriate on an airplane. The Canadian pop star was embarrassed and quickly apologized after that.

Between the Covers: ?Hilarious, provocative, and supersmart, 'Year ...

An alien advance party was suddenly nosing around my planet.
?

Worse, they were lawyering up. . . .

In the hilarious tradition of The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy, Rob Reid takes you on a headlong journey through the outer reaches of the universe?and the inner workings of our absurdly dysfunctional music industry.

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it?s a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news.

The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity?s music ever since ?Year Zero? (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang. The resulting fines and penalties have bankrupted the whole universe. We humans suddenly own everything?and the aliens are not amused.

Nick Carter has just been tapped to clean up this mess before things get ugly, and he?s an unlikely galaxy-hopping hero: He?s scared of heights. He?s also about to be fired. And he happens to have the same name as a Backstreet Boy. But he does know a thing or two about copyright law. And he?s packing a couple of other pencil-pushing superpowers that could come in handy.

Soon he?s on the run from a sinister parrot and a highly combustible vacuum cleaner. With Carly and Frampton as his guides, Nick now has forty-eight hours to save humanity, while hopefully wowing the hot girl who lives down the hall from him.

The 1940 U.S. Census ? Irish Genealogical Society International ...

If you?re an Ancestry.com subscriber with one or more?family trees posted on the site, you?ve probably been receiving ?record hints? about family members found in?the 1940 U.S.?Census.? An excellent?article about the 1940 census appears?in NGS Magazine (Volume 38, Number 2, April-June 2012), published by the National Genealogical Society.

The article, ?The 1940 federal census?, was written by Constance Potter and Diane Petro. End notes indicate their information was drawn from several government sources, such as the Bureau of the Census and http://1940census,archives.gov. I encourage you to find a copy of the magazine?and read?the article?in its entirety. Following are excerpts:

As with every census, the 1940 census shows the social, political, and economic issues of the previous decade.? This census reflects the Great Depression and President Franklin D. Roosevelt?s New Deal recovery programs of the 1930s?

The enumeration districts are smaller in the 1940 census; it appears that the average enumeration district is between fifty and sixty pages. There can be up to three sets of pages for each enumeration district: page 1A and pages following; page 61A and pages following; and page 81A and pages following. Page 1A and the following pages list the people at home the day of the census; for people not at home the day of the census, but enumerated on a later date, the enumerator listed them starting on page 61A. Transients ? such as people living in trailer parks, hotels or flop houses ? are listed beginning on page 81A. Not all enumeration districts have pages 61A or 81A or both.

After the census got to Washington, the staff stamped the pages for each county consecutively starting with 1. Because it can appear that pages were skipped, the stamped pages let you know that no pages are missing.

Column 7: Identification of Persons Furnishing Information?

The instructions to the enumerator asked the census taker to mark with a circled X the person in each home who answered the questions. Often, the wife gave the information. If the information came from a person who was not a member of the household, the enumerator was to ?write the name of this person in left-hand margin??

Column 14: Education ? Highest Grade of School Completed?

Although questions about education were asked in earlier censuses, this is the first time the census asked for the highest grade of school completed. At that time, many peopled graduated from high school in the eleventh grade.

Column 16: Citizenship?of the Foreign Born??

Beginning with the 1900 census, people were asked if they were naturalized, had filed their papers, or were aliens. In 1940, the Census Bureau added the category ?American Citizen Born Abroad,? which covered people born abroad or at sea?

Columns 17-20: In What Place Did This Person Live on 1 April 1935?

The Census Bureau, interested in internal migration, asked everyone where he or she lived on 1 April 1935?If a person had lived in a different place, the enumerator entered the city or town, county, and state. If the person lived in the same place, but a different house, the enumerator entered ?Same place? and if the person lived in the same house, the enumerator wrote ?Same house.?

Columns 21-33: Employment Status

The schedule asked thirteen questions about the employment status of people 14 years old and older. Except for columns 27 and 31, the answers apply to the week of 24-30 March, the week before the census. Included in the new questions was ?Amount of money, wages, or salary received (including commissions)? (column 32). Many people, including farmers and restaurant and store owners have a 0 in that column. That is because these people were not working for wages or a salary, but were self-employed.

Column 22: Public Emergency Work

The census asked if anyone in the household during the week of 24-30 March 1940, was at work on, or assigned to, public emergency work projects conducted by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the National Youth Administration (NYA), the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) or state or local work relief agencies. The WPA, established 6 May 1935, developed programs to move unemployed workers from relief to jobs? The NYA, established under the WPA, gave part-time jobs to high school and college students to earn money to continue their education.

The CCC, created 31 March 1933, employed men aged 18-25 in conservation work in the national parks and forests?

Columns 35-50: Questions on the Supplemental Schedules

At the bottom of each schedule, a supplementary schedule asked additinoal questions of 5 percent of the population, or two people on preselected lines. These supplemental questions include the birthplace of the respondent?s parents, military service, and if a person had deductions from Social Security or Railroad Retirement taken from wages.

Starting with the 1880 census, people were asked not only where they were born but also the birthplace of their father and mother. In the 1940 census, this question was moved to the supplemental schedule?

The answers to the new questions ? and the old ? will tell us, in detail, what the United States looked like on April 1, 1940, and what issues were most relevant to Americans after a decade of economic depression. As with all censuses, the answers to these questions may lead to different avenues of research.

Thanks to NGS Magazine and authors Constance Potter and Diane Petro.

Army leaders eye mental, physical health of force | Health and Fitness

FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) ? A top Army general said Friday that the military remains focused on meeting the physical and mental health needs of soldiers and families, including providing additional behavioral health programs.

After touring Fort Riley in northeast Kansas, Gen. Lloyd Austin said leaders were focused on putting services and support structures in place to build resiliency in a force that has been at war for more than a decade. Austin and other top Army officials have spent the week touring Army posts in Georgia, North Carolina and Texas to review programs that include suicide prevention, care of wounded soldiers, prevention of sexual assault and evaluation of disabilities.

The Army?s behavioral health services have come under question following incidents in Iraq, Afghanistan and Fort Hood, Texas, in which soldiers have been charged with murdering fellow soldiers and civilians. Austin said, however, that any reviews initiated in response to those incidents were outside his current survey.

Austin discussed the suicide rate among soldiers, saying reducing it would require continued efforts by Army behavioral health professionals and partnerships with community resources.

?Suicide is the toughest enemy I?ve faced. It is an enemy because we are losing soldiers to this fight,? Austin said.

Austin said the war in Afghanistan was the Army?s mission but that maintaining the health of the force mentally and physically was equally important.

?This is absolutely central to the readiness of our Army, not only with respect to the current fight, but the next fight,? he said.

At Fort Riley, Austin visited with post and 1st Infantry Division leaders about what is being done to meet the health care needs of 18,000 soldiers and their families assigned to the Kansas post. The division?s headquarters and one brigade are deployed over the next year to Afghanistan.

The general said part of the purpose of touring the different posts was to figure out how Army headquarters can eliminate ?friction points? by either by changing policies or providing additional resources.

?This about taking care of our most precious asset, that is our people,? Austin said.

He said while the tour is focused on the broader health of the force, behavioral health was part of that, adding that more resources were needed. Behavioral health is part of the focus, but Austin said that there?s more work to be done and getting more resources

?We need that capability and it?s part of what we do. We?ve made some strides, but there?s still some work to be done,? Austin said.

Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, surgeon general of the Army, said the number of behavior health providers has increased by 83 percent since 2007. She said the Army is placing behavior health services in each brigade and integrating it in primary care services for soldiers and families.

By placing a single group around your feet and something just on the other side of your own ball, you may either set up the correct line upfront or return and view the feet after having a golf swing to find out if you needed the correct installation.

When you are just off of the natural although the lawn is too long to attempt a putt, use a 7 or 8 steel to do an easy chip for the hole. Using the same strategy you would use for a putt, an easy cerebrovascular event using a 7 or 8 metal will raise your tennis ball just past the edge of the tough and fringe after which allow it to roll smoothly in the environmentally friendly to the pit.

One of the primary points you should do as a beginning golf player is exercise. The only way it is possible to become fluent within the vocabulary of the game of golf is perfect for each transfer, measures and reaction to come to be next mother nature. When you are able engage in with out thinking about it, you are getting a place.

A lot of people grumble about the inability to enhance their online game once they strike a certain point. This is a good time to go back to the fundamentals and possibly even try taking some golfing training from your expert. Normally there are certain issues that may be observed and better on. This allows you to travel engage in the next rounded by incorporating tricks the sleeve that boost your video game.

Exercise by playing within the sand to acquire out of all those traps better when you?re enjoying live playing golf. You don?t need to go to the seaside. Just chuck your balls right into a fine sand trap on the training course when you?re training a day and work with reaching balls out.

What you?ve acquired by studying the ideas above is there are no magical, immediately-working tactics you are able to pertain to go from 16 over to 4 below in one circular. It just doesn?t job like that. But provided you can apply these guidelines and work on your general video game, you can begin to enjoy what it?s enjoy being a great golfer.

To Singapore... from an expat returning home - blog*spot

Singapore gets more things right than other countries, even if its citizens disagree

By David Fedo, Published The Straits Times, 28 Jul 2012

ON THE eve of National Day, after a little more than five years of living and working in Singapore, my wife Susan and I take leave of this amazing country. We will return to our home just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, to take up our old lives among our American family and friends.

But the truth is, after Singapore, our lives will never be the same.

Singapore's impact on most expatriates and other visitors, no matter how long they reside on this island, is often forever. It's the palpable feeling that somehow Singapore gets more things right than most other countries, and that day-to-day life here is on the whole better than in many other places. Not perfect, of course, but better.

Think of the excellent schools, polytechnics and universities, for example, and the fact that there seems to be less unemployment, homelessness and crime here than elsewhere - bugaboos that plague so many other nations in today's volatile economy.

The diverse races and religious groups respect one another. The food is wonderful, with a variety unmatched anywhere, even in Paris, New York or Beijing. Medical care is exemplary. The green spaces, now crowned by Gardens by the Bay, are spectacular. Younger and now even some older Singaporeans may take these virtues for granted; those of us who are foreigners do not.

Our story is not an unfamiliar one for expatriates. Susan and I arrived here on a contract for two years, and have stayed for three more. Our work for Wheelock College (its home campus is in Boston) and our imported bachelor's degree in early childhood education has been a pleasure. We loved our Singapore students, all young women committed to the nation's children, and our faculty - a collaborative group from Wheelock-Boston, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Seed Institute - have been extraordinary.

Wheelock has just signed a long-term agreement with the Singapore Institute of Technology and will be in this country for many years to come. Susan and I will watch from afar as the Wheelock-Singapore partnership grows and flourishes.

Beyond all of its other virtues and attractions, including its economic and commercial successes, the arts in Singapore over recent years have truly 'blossomed', to use the word Professor Tommy Koh does in an article in the National University of Singapore's Alumnus magazine. 'We were once described by our critics as a 'cultural desert',' he explains, but says those days are gone for good - 'no one would say the same thing today'.

Prof Koh is right. Yet I wonder if many Singaporeans fully appreciate the remarkable blossoming of the arts - call it an explosion - through the seasonal festivals and year-round array of productions, performances, publications and exhibits, as much as those of us who come from outside Singapore.

Too often I have heard Singaporeans downplay their country's artistic achievements, saying 'It (the play or gallery opening) was okay, I guess, but it's not New York or London.'

But Singapore doesn't have to be New York or London. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra can stand on its own merits, and so can the experimental theatre productions by any number of talented groups here. The museums mount exhibits of interest to Asians and Westerners, as do Singapore's diverse galleries. The Arts House is a jewel in the cultural life of this country.

Poetry is a special interest of mine, and Singapore's best young poets - Toh Hsien Min, Cyril Wong, Yong Shu Hoong, Alvin Pang and Felix Cheong, among others - have all created a lively forum for verse that challenges old assumptions about Singapore's allegedly scant impact on readers here and abroad. Speaking of poets, what small press in South-east Asia has done more to advance their works than Singapore's own Ethos Books, headed by Fong Hoe Fang and Chan Wai Han?

Yes, there is no perfect place, as the English statesman Thomas More wrote in his book Utopia, whose title may be translated as 'nowhere'. Singapore has its own deficiencies too, and its citizens are only too quick to point them out.

But in leaving this small island republic, I urge Singaporeans to see, as so many expatriates see, the superiority of Singapore over so many other countries - and not only countries in South-east Asia, but around the globe. I do love America, and it will be fun going home, but I will miss Singapore, its special pleasures and my many friends here forever.

The writer was executive director and visiting scholar of the Wheelock College (Boston, United States) Centre for International Education, Leadership and Innovation (Singapore) since June 2007.

Lochte wins 400 IM in blowout; Phelps finishes 4th

LONDON (AP) ? Ryan Lochte strolled the deck of the Olympic Aquatics Centre wearing diamonds in his mouth and lime-green sneakers on the feet that powered him through the water faster than anyone else. Beaming, he chomped playfully on his gold medal while Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" blared throughout the massive arena.

Michael Phelps?

He was nowhere to be found.

Not during the race.

Not when it came time to hand out the medals.

On a stunner of an opening night at the pool in London, Phelps was routed by his American rival in the 400-meter individual medley, losing to Lochte by more than 4 seconds Saturday. That's not all: The winningest Olympian ever didn't win any medal at all, the first time that's happened in a race of this magnitude since he was a 15-year-old kid competing in just one event at the Sydney Games, a dozen years ago.

"It was horrible," Phelps told coach Bob Bowman when he climbed out.

Bowman's reply: "It was."

Lochte turned the much-anticipated duel with Phelps into a blowout, raising serious questions about whether the guy who has won 14 gold medals and 16 medals overall has anything left in the tank for his Olympic farewell.

Phelps is planning to retire as soon as he finishes the last of his seven races in London, but he looked ready to call it a career while struggling just to pull himself from the water when his first event was done.

He was totally spent.

He was thoroughly beaten, perhaps signaling a changing of the guard at the pool.

"This is my year," said Lochte, who popped in his grillz ? diamond-studded mouth jewelry ? for the victory ceremony. "I know it and I feel it, because I've put in hard work. I've trained my butt off for four years ... and there's no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold."

For Phelps, the start of these games couldn't have been more out of character.

He barely qualified for the evening final, a performance that hinted at trouble ahead. Trouble indeed. Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish, blown out by Lochte and beaten by Brazil's Thiago Pereira and Japan's Kosuke Hagino.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds. Pereira (4:08.86) and Hagino (4:08.94) were well back but ahead of Phelps, who touched fourth in 4:09.28 ? nearly 5 1-2 seconds off his world record from the Beijing Olympics and not nearly as fast as he went during the U.S. trials last month.

Since finishing fifth in his lone event at Sydney, the 200 butterfly, Phelps was 16-of-16 when it came to winning medals at the Olympics ? 14 golds and two bronzes. That run is over.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about as fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race of the Olympics at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But he'll need a major comeback. After one race, he looks nothing like the swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

"I'm surprised, and not pleasantly," Bowman said. "I expected he'd be in the 4:06 range."

With first lady Michelle Obama in the house waving a small U.S. flag, everyone expected a duel between the two American stars.

Only Lochte showed up.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

China had a big night, claiming a couple of gold medals.

Sixteen-year-old Ye Shiwen set a world record in the women's 400 individual medley ? only the third mark to fall since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009. She won in 4:28.43, breaking the mark of 4:29.45 by Australia's Stephanie Rice at the 2008 Beijing Games. American Elizabeth Beisel took silver and China's Li Xuanxu grabbed the bronze.

Sun Yang flirted with a world record in the men's 400 freestyle. He took gold in 3:40.14, just off the mark of 3:40.07 by Germany's Paul Biedermann in a rubberized suit three years ago. When it was done, Sun propped himself on the lane rope, pumping his fist and splashing the water.

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan won silver in 3:42.06, fortunate even to take part after initially being disqualified for a false start in the prelims. The ruling was overturned by governing body FINA a couple of hours later on appeal. Peter Vanderkaay of the U.S. won the bronze.

Australia captured gold in the women's 400 freestyle relay with an Olympic record of 3:33.15, rallying to pass the Americans and hold off the fast-charging Netherlands.

The U.S. got off to a blistering start with Missy Franklin swimming leadoff under world-record pace, and the Americans were still ahead after Jessica Hardy went next. But the Australians rallied behind Brittany Elmslie on the third 100, and Melanie Schlanger held on at the end, with Ranomi Kromowidjojo closing fast to give the Netherlands a silver in 3:33.79.

The other members of the winning team were Alicia Coutts and Cate Campbell.

The Americans slipped to the bronze in 3:34.24, but that was still good enough to give Natalie Coughlin the 12th medal of her career, tying Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female Olympians in any sport.

Coughlin swam in the morning prelims, then was reduced to the role of cheerleader in the evening as the Americans went with Franklin, Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt. Everyone who swims on a relay gets a medal, though.

"I really have no idea what to think of it so far," Coughlin said. "I'll have to take it all in tonight. I'm very proud of it, but I've never been on a morning relay before."

There was no medal for Phelps.

His close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this."

Phelps still has six more events to swim in London, plenty of time to make up for his dismal start. He remains two behind the most medals won by any Olympian ? Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's mark of 18 ? nine gold, five silver, four bronze.

Phelps put himself in position to swim another eight events with his performance at the U.S. trials, but he decided to drop the 200-meter freestyle, feeling one less race would give his body a better chance to recover and improve his performance in the other events.

Now, he may be regretting that decision.

The 400 IM was an event he has dominated, winning gold at the last two Olympics and holding the world record for a full decade. But, tired of putting his body through such a grind, he dropped it from his program after setting a world record in Beijing four years ago (4:03.84), vowing never to swim it again.

He should have stuck with that pledge. Clearly, Phelps didn't leave himself enough time to get back in the kind of shape he needed to win the brutal race, having only brought it back earlier this year.

"I was lucky to get in," he said, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

They might be working together on Sunday, when both are in the mix to compete for the U.S. in the 4x100 free relay.

There appear to be no hard feelings.

"Congrats to (at)RyanLochte," Phelps tweeted afterward. "Way to keep that title in the country where it belongs!!"

"Thanks," Lochte replied: "I couldn't do it without you."

New breast cancer screening implemented locally | Cancer Kick

??Action News

Capital Health in Hopewell, New Jersey is among the first in the country to put molecular breast imaging into daily practice.

Patients get a small injection of a radiotracer, then sit in a chair as the machine does the test.

The radiotracer goes straight to any tumors, and they show up as ?hot spots.?

Dr. Ann Moch says MBI is being used in addition to mammograms for women who run a high-risk of cancer, due to family history, genetics, or dense breast tissue.

?We?ve picked up lesions that haven?t been seen on a mammogram and we?ve found breast cancers in people who might not have detected it for quite some time,? said Dr. Moch.

Donna Reel was one of the first to get MBI screening at Capital Health.

Breast cancer runs in her family, and the cancer that took her mother?s life was not picked up by mammograms until very late.

Although she gets regular mammograms, Reel says MBI gave her extra assurance.

?It was very easythe doctor said I had textbook negative results so I was thrilled,? said Reel.

Dr. Moch says MBI testing takes about half an hour, and has a very low false-positive rate.

Lessons from the Olympics, by David Brooks | NYTimes eXaminer

July 27, 2012 ????? 2 Comments

olympics-london

By Marie Burns:

?Abraham Lincoln ? was right about slavery.? It?s good to know that New York Times columnist David Brooks is on the right side of history here.

Unless slaves are involved, ?a house divided against itself? is in good shape, according to Brooks. Apparently, Eric Cantor and the ?Just Say No? Republican Tea Party Congress are national treasures ? as long as they don?t openly advocate slavery. Other forms of systematic oppression ? A-Okay.

?The Olympics are a peaceful celebration of our warlike nature.? For example, the Olympics village is ?just a magical, fairy-tale place, like Alice in Wonderland, where everything is possible. You could win a gold medal and you can sleep with a really hot guy.? ? Carrie Sheinberg, former U.S. Olympics skier and de facto American goodwill ambassador. I?d assume the nationality of the temporary partner is less important than the hotness. If, like me, you are not possessed of a ?warlike nature,? consider yourself abnormal. And do not waste your time trying to hook up at the Olympic Village. Olympians will not ?celebrate? you.

The opening ceremony ? are [sic.] a lavish celebration of the cooperative virtues: unity, friendship, equality, compassion and care.? Caveat: Don?t display the South Korean flag when introducing North Korean athletes. Many of the Korean players may be biological kin, but the North Koreans are just not into ?unity, friendship, equality, compassion and caring? for their South Korean cousins.

?There will be a lot of dancing.? This is a bore, but it?s what we ?exceptional? Americans have come to expect from the dimwitted Brits.

It?s hard to know just how well [the London Olympic games] will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting: the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials ? that obviously is not something which is encouraging?. There are three parts that make the games successful. Number one of course are the athletes?. Number two are the volunteers?. But number three are the people of the country. Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? That?s something we only find out once the games actually begin. ? Mitt Romney, to NBC News? Brian Williams, Wednesday

As as exceptional American wearing a genuine gold U.S. flag pin, one also has to wonder if the Brits are as patriotic as are those on this side of the pond. We?ll see.

?England [sic.],? after all, ?is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn?t make things that the rest of the world wants to buy. And if it hadn?t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler?s ambition.? ? Mitt Romney, No Apology. It was awfully nice of Brooks to write a column reminding us that his favorite presidential candidate is in ?England? embarrassing our exceptional country every time he opens his mouth.

We like to watch dancers because ?we?re social, semi-herdlike creatures, we take a primordial pleasure in the sight of a large number of people moving in unison.? We the little people are a bovine lot, genetically wired to follow the leader and fit seamlessly into our assigned roles. Perhaps communism is the angel of our better natures. (See Brooks on ?our followership problem.? Sometimes we don?t do our ?semi-herdlike? best.)

Dance is physical, like sports, but, in many ways, it is the opposite of sports. In dance, the purpose is to blend with and mirror each other; in sport, the purpose is to come out ahead. Dancers perform for the audience and offer a gift of emotion; athletes respond to one another and the spectators are just there to witness and cheer. Dancers, especially at the opening ceremony, smile in warmth and friendship. No true sport is ever done smiling (this is the problem with figure skating and competitive cheerleading)?.

If the opening ceremony is win-win, most of the rest of the games are win-lose. If the opening ceremony mimics peace, the competitions mimic warfare. It?s not about the brotherhood of humankind. It?s about making sure our country beats the Chinese in the medal chart.

This is a long passage, so it affords several lessons. First, a good essay often compares and contrasts one phenomenon with another, a column-writing prescription Brooks likely learned in his 8th-grade English class. Second, figure-skating is not a sport. (What about dressage? If the horses don?t smile during performances, I?ll bet the riders do.) And, third, it turns out that lovely opening ceremony is a communistic sham. Not all lessons are equal.

The games comprise ?a celebration of the competitive virtues: tenacity, courage, excellence, supremacy, discipline and conflict.? Who knew ?supremacy? and ?conflict? were virtues? Luckily, we have David Brooks to inform us of the less obvious virtues.

The marathoner struggling against exhaustion, the boxer trying to pummel his foe, the diver resolutely focused on her task. The purpose is to be tougher and better than the people who are seeking the same pinnacle?.

Through fierce competition, sport separates the elite from the mediocre. It identifies the heroes and standards of excellence that everybody else can emulate (a noble loser can serve as well as a talented winner). The idea is not to win friendship; it?s to win glory. We get to see people experiencing the thrill of victory from the agony of defeat and judge how well they respond.

There is always a place for clich?s and bromides, even if Brooks 8th-grade English teacher said otherwise. S/he, after all, never got a job at the New York Times.

? the Olympic Games appeal both to our desire for fellowship and our desire for status, to the dreams of community and also supremacy. And, of course, these desires are in tension. But the world is, too. The world isn?t a jigsaw puzzle that fits neatly and logically together. It?s a system of clashing waves that can never be fully reconciled.

If you?re reckless enough, clich?s and bromides can turn into grand metaphors, handy for oversimplifying complex dynamics in fewer than 800 words ? Brooks? New York Times biweekly allotment. The ?tensions? of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are ?waves? clashing against the ?tensions? of Benjamin Netanyahu. You cannot fit waves into a jigsaw puzzle. They will splash and clash till the puzzle pieces get awfully soggy.

?The enduring popularity of the Olympics teach [sic.] the lesson that if you find yourself caught between two competing impulses, you don?t always need to choose between them. You can go for both simultaneously.? If you?re reckless enough, clich?s and bromides can turn into personal philosophy. Also, it is definitely unnecessary to have noun and verb agree; maybe that?s symptomatic of ?competing inpulses? or ?clashing waves.?

?F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said that the mark of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two contradictory thoughts in your mind at the same time.? Don?t cite only one authority ? see Lincoln, above ? when you can cite two or three.

?Some parents and teachers like the cooperative virtues and distrust the competitive ones, so, laughably, they tell their kids that they are going to play sports but nobody is going to keep score.? Forget ?cooperation,? kiddies; bullying and brute force are the names of the game. We call it ?sports? and applaud ?good sportsmanship,? but that was an ethos of another time. Athletics is not for fun, recreation or personal physical, mental and social development. If you don?t play to win, you?re a loser. Even if your ?laughable? teacher isn?t keeping score. Here, Brooks looks back past the 8th grade into an earlier, frightening time when circumstances forced him to learn how to negotiate the delicate bully-v.-bullied equipoise.

Politics has become a contest of monomaniacs. One faction champions austerity while another champions growth. One party becomes the party of economic security and the other becomes the party of creative destruction. The right course is usually to push hard in both directions, to be a house creatively divided against itself, to thrive amid the contradiction.

If you?re reckless, clich?s and bromides can turn into confusing political prescriptions. Are monomaniacs desirable? Should they stand their ground? Or should individual monomaniacs ?push hard in both directions? until they tear themselves asunder? Being one of the non-warrior subset of little people, I?m afraid I had trouble processing David Brooks? Big Idea.

All I learned is this: cooperation is for sissies.

And there will be dancing.

Let the games begin.

Deeper with Jesus in Rhode Island: The Single Step Revolution

Go big or go home!

I love that motto. It sounds bold, fierce, and adventurous.

I?m an all or nothing kind of girl. If I?m in, I?m all in. If I can?t do it with excellence, I don?t see the point of doing it at all.

Sounds admirable, doesn?t it? Well, it sounds good but it doesn?t always play out that way. That?s the kind of thinking that becomes an obstacle to much of the growth and change I desire.

Huh?

Take weight loss, for example. We?ve all approached New Year?s weight loss resolutions with a ?go for the gusto? plan. We?ve thrown out all of the junk food, enrolled at a gym, stocked up on low-calorie dinners and drinks, and bought new scales that tell us everything from our weight to the tenth decimal point to the Ph factor of our shampoo.

This approach works for a week, or two, but by February, fast food wrappers litter the floor of our car and the scale lies broken on the ground outside the bathroom window.

I?ve worked with weight loss hopefuls who tell me that eating right is so confusing and complicated. They?ve tried the all-or-nothing approach time and again only to fail as often. What can they do? It?s hopeless.

So, I ask. ?What is one thing you do that you know EVERY weight loss plan would say is wrong??

Often, the answer is, ?I drink sugar sodas or frozen mocha latte?s every day.?

Okay. I suggest. This week, don?t do that. Drink only water.

They squint at me with skepticism. Some get angry thinking I?m patronizing them. But those who try it find a difference in the scale at the end of the week.

They return for more. ?Is there something else you?re doing that you know EVERY weight loss plan would say is wrong??

?I eat fast food or pizza every day for at least one meal.?

?This week,? I suggest, ?continue to drink only water and limit your fast food/pizza intake to only two days a week.?

Again, the scale goes down.

Next step, do you sit most of the time? Stand up and march during every TV commercial.

One change at a time, person after person begins to slowly grow into success. It?s not exciting or sexy or the makings of a Nike commercial. No one will buy my book titled ?The Long, Slow Way to Lasting Weight Loss?, but it works.

Today I got to thinking, what if I employed this method to my spiritual life?

Often, I try to drink of the Holy Spirit like a clown sipping from a fire hose. My ?go big or go home? attempts at living like Jesus often result in discouragement or spiritual burnout. I pout at God that I?m hopeless.

But if you spend enough time observing nature, you?ll notice that God?s idea of growth involves a slow, incremental process repeated over time.

Knowing how to change into the person Jesus wants you to be can feel as confusing and complicated as sorting out what healthy eating looks like. One week your moved by a sermon on reaching out to the poor. Next day on the radio, you?re impressed by a speaker on fasting and prayer. A friend gives you a book on 10 Ways to Tell Total Strangers They?re Going to Hell. Soon, you?re feeling overwhelmed.

What if we simply began to employ, one passage at a time, what we clearly know from God?s word?

What if we took one clear teaching a week and obeyed that teaching in our life at every opportunity?

?Do everything without arguing or complaining.? Philippians 2:14

?Share with the Lord?s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.? Romans 12:13

?My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,? James 1: 19

?But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,? Matthew 5:44

?Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?? Matthew 6:25

I?m going to try it this week. I?m going to pick one of these commands and seek to live it every moment of the day. No great spiritual life overhaul, just simple obedience to one command.

We?re always looking for ?the magic answer.? In weight loss, the human race chases every trend and fad but the boring, effective truth is that weight loss comes about by eating less and moving more. Goals are reached one simple change at a time.

Christians are often guilty of the same thing. We want to be closer to God so we chase religious experiences, we attend conferences and retreats, we download the hottest new podcast, and order a box of Christian how-to books.

I think the truth is quieter than that.

God whispers that if we love Him, we will keep His commands. He tells us in James 4: 7-8, ?Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.?

The most revolutionary portions of scripture are the clearest. Our problem is not that we don?t understand our faith, it?s that we don?t attempt to obey what we do understand.

Maybe a week is too much to attempt for some of us. I may need to try just one day of doing everything without grumbling or complaining. I daresay it won?t bring peace on earth but it sure will change the atmosphere of my own home!

What do you think, all of you all-or-nothing brothers and sisters. That approach to life has its place but there are many projects and revolutions that are best attempted one baby-step at a time.

Try it. Choose one clear passage of scripture to obey all day Saturday and Sunday. Let me know what God does through your single-step obedience.

Maybe it will start a revolution.

Having a hard time today...(OT, sorta) - Adoption.com Forums

I am having a hard time right now...tons of change going on all at once and I am not one to process change quickly, or while running around...I need time alone to reflect...something I am short on right now.

Last year my oldest boy left for college(I have four bsons)and that was a transition...my second oldest had left for the military the previous year, and this year, my third is getting ready to leave for college, too...the oldest has been home for the summer, so, they will both be leaving to go to school(the oldest back to school) at the same time...well, we just came to the very difficult decision to have my youngest boy go live with his father(he is going to be 16 and seems to really need his dad now)...he is SO unhappy here..tons of reasons I won't go into now, but he is a real home body and has no real friends to speak of...and now all of his brothers will be gone. He has a younger step bro at his dad's whom he really loves and gets along with...and when he is there he attends youth group(something he refuses to do here) as a matter of routine...and he is just happier and more upbeat. But, am suddenly facing going from three boys highschool through college age being here to none. And, my husband works out of town often, so it will be me and the babies alone...and, I will suddenly have all of the household responsibilities single handedly...I am just overwhelmed even *trying* to process all of this...I walk into my sons room and see his bed and start crying...even though I know it is best for him. I have been THE primary caregiver for these boys their entire lives...it is so hard to let go and let his dad be the primary parent. I really don't know *how* to do this!
