The vending machine started as a simple device, offering small booklets and cigarettes for less than a quarter. As technology developed and consumers' needs changed, so too did the machine. They become associated with candy, snacks, and sodas, but they didn't stop there. Or more like the people creating them didn't want them to stop at just simple snack food. Places like Japan have some of the strangest machines we've ever seen, from live lobsters to bike rentals. It's not just about weird items for purchase though. Better technology also means better interaction between the user and the machine.
Drink and snack vending machines have turned into intelligent kiosks, using digital signage to attract buyers and increase revenue through third-party advertising. Consumers aren't just looking for ease of use, though they do certainly want that. They want more control over their transactions, more options, and more interactions. This is great news for the retailer. Through interactions, vending machines are able to gather data and information about the consumer, providing retailers with relevant feedback. It's an ideal situation for both parties.
On the consumer end, we have seen more vending machines using touchscreen interfaces and the ability to pay by credit card, some even offering mobile payments. On the flip side, advanced software allows the seller to stay up to date on merchandise. There is no more waiting for a phone call or random outings to check if a vending machine is low on stock. The seller can see changes in stock as soon as they happen. He not only knows what needs to be refilled, but he knows what items are moving faster than others so he can plan accordingly next time.
In the not too distant future, vending machine manufacturers hope to bring the machines to a social level. Soon you will be able to connect to the retailer's website, social media site, or even a loyalty program. There is also the potential to connect with an e-commerce website and purchase a product and have it delivered to their home. How about we get social? Take a picture and have it posted on the brand's Facebook page. Maybe have a coupon sent to your phone for participating. There are endless possibilities, and why would anyone want to hinder the future of such a useful tool?
The mobile prospects are on the forefront right now, especially with an increase in smartphone usage. Consumers can use Google Wallet or text-to-pay. Coupons can be scanned directly from phones. It's a wonderful way to interact and make life easier than it already is.
The future definitely looks bright for vending machines, whether they sell food, clothing, or books. Who's to say where vending machines are headed!
